Setting up two-factor authentication (2FA)

Setting up 2FA for your email means adding a second step alongside your password: a temporary code from an authenticator app on your phone. At Mailflux, two-factor authentication is optionally available in every plan, and you switch it on in a few minutes through the webmail at webmail.mailflux.eu. That way your mailbox stays protected, even if someone were to get hold of your password. We'll walk you through it step by step.

What you need

  • Your email address and password to log in to webmail.mailflux.eu.
  • An authenticator app on your phone (a free app from your app store that generates login codes).
  • A safe place to keep your recovery codes, such as a password manager.

Setting up 2FA for your email: step by step

  1. Go to webmail.mailflux.eu and log in with your email address and password.
  2. Open Settings and go to the Security section (sometimes called Account or Two-factor authentication).
  3. Click Enable two-factor authentication.
  1. Open your authenticator app and choose to add an account there.
  2. Use the app to scan the QR code that appears on the screen. The app now shows a new code for your mailbox every 30 seconds.
  3. Type the code from the app into the webmail screen to confirm that the link works.
  4. Store the recovery codes shown in a safe place and click Save.

What changes afterwards?

The next time you log in, you first enter your password and then the current code from your app. That code keeps changing and is only valid for a short time, which means a stolen password is worthless on its own. In a mail program like Thunderbird or Outlook you usually won't notice anything during daily use; the server settings stay the same and are listed under IMAP and server settings. Keep your recovery codes handy: they are your spare key if you don't have your phone with you. If you'd like more background on logging in safely, read securing your email with 2FA.

Not working?

  • The code is rejected. Codes expire quickly. Wait for the next one and make sure the time on your phone is set automatically, otherwise the codes drift out of sync.
  • The QR code won't scan. In the app, choose the option to enter the key manually; it appears as text below the QR code.
  • You've lost your phone. Use one of your recovery codes to log in. Don't have those anymore? Then get in touch with our support and we'll help you personally.

Is 2FA mandatory at Mailflux?

No, two-factor authentication is optional in every plan. You decide for yourself whether to switch it on. We do recommend it, certainly if you work with sensitive or business data: it's one of the simplest ways to protect your mailbox a lot better without making your daily use more complicated.

Which authenticator app can I use?

Any common authenticator app works, because they all follow the same standard for temporary codes. Pick a free app from your phone's store, add your mailbox with the QR code and you're done. If you'd like more explanation of the concept itself, read the short note on 2FA.
