Setup & how-to

Setting up a catch-all

Setting up a catch-all means you designate one mailbox that captures all email sent to an address on your domain that doesn't otherwise exist. If someone sends a message to verkoop@jouwzaak.be while that address hasn't been created, it still lands neatly in your catch-all instead of disappearing. You arrange this in your Mailflux account. In this guide we explain what a catch-all does and how to switch it on.

What you need

  • Access to your Mailflux account, where you manage your domain and mailboxes.
  • An existing mailbox to serve as the catch address (for example your main mailbox).
  • Your domain already connected to Mailflux and working.

Email on your own domain

Setting up a catch-all: step by step

  1. Log in to your Mailflux account and go to the management of your domain.
  2. Find the email or domain settings where you manage addresses and aliases.
  3. Choose the option for a catch-all (sometimes called catch address or all other email).
  1. Under Destination, select the mailbox where the captured messages should arrive.
  2. Save the setting. From now on, mail to unknown addresses on your domain ends up in that mailbox.

The exact location and naming of this setting may differ per account. If you can't find the option right away, look in the email settings of your domain or contact our support; we'll point you to the right place.

Handy, but with one caveat

A catch-all ensures you never miss a message because of a typo in your address, and that's convenient if you want to keep one central address. The downside: spam sent to random, made-up addresses also comes in, and on a popular domain that can add up considerably. If you see a lot of unwanted mail, you're better off creating separate aliases for the addresses you actually use, and keeping the catch-all as a safety net alongside them. A middle ground is to switch the catch-all on temporarily when you phase out an address, so you can still see who's using the old address, and then switch it off again afterwards.

Not working?

  • Nothing arrives in the catch-all. Check whether you chose the right destination mailbox and whether your domain is correctly connected to Mailflux. You'll find the DNS and server values at IMAP and server settings.
  • I'm suddenly getting a lot more spam. That comes with a catch-all, because all unknown addresses are captured. Consider using only real aliases.
  • I can't find the setting. The location differs per account. Contact support and we'll set the catch-all up together for you.

Done

Your catch-all is ready and no more mail to your domain gets lost. Send yourself a test message to a made-up address on your domain to see whether it arrives neatly. Can't figure it out, or would you rather we set it up? We're happy to help you personally.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a catch-all and an alias?

An alias is one specific extra address that you create yourself and point to a mailbox. A catch-all, by contrast, captures all addresses on your domain, including addresses you never created. Aliases give more control; a catch-all is a broad safety net for everything else that comes in.

Can I combine a catch-all with individual aliases?

Yes, that works fine side by side. You create aliases for the addresses you actually use, and the catch-all captures the rest. That way you never miss a message because of a typo, while keeping important addresses neatly separated. If in doubt, we're happy to help you with the right setup.
