2FA: the meaning of two-factor authentication

2FA, or two-factor authentication, is an extra security step where you enter a second code in addition to your password to log in. The 2fa meaning in short: even with your password, an intruder can't just walk in.

2FA: the meaning

2FA stands for two-factor authentication. When you log in, your account asks for two things: something you know (your password) and something you have (for example, a code from an app on your phone). Only with both do you get access.

Explanation

Passwords leak or get guessed, more often than you'd think. With 2FA, a stolen password alone isn't enough, because the second step is missing. For business email with sensitive data, that's a simple but strong extra barrier. At Mailflux you can optionally enable 2FA on your mailbox. Read more in what is 2FA for email.

Example

Someone figures out the password for you@yourbusiness.be and tries to log in. Because you have 2FA enabled, the system asks for the code from your authenticator app. That code sits safely on your phone, so the intruder gets no further.

Why 2FA is worth it

Your email is often the key to the rest of your digital life: password recovery for other services usually runs through it. If your mailbox falls into the wrong hands, someone can use it to break in further. 2FA adds an extra lock on top, and you set it up in a few minutes. In day-to-day use you barely notice it, because many apps remember a trusted device. For sensitive or business data, it's one of the simplest security gains you can make.
